 A new way to treat stormwater has recently been introduced into New Zealand by Hynds Environmental.
The Smart Sponge®, invented and manufactured by Abtech Industries in the United States, is the key to this range of products that specifically target the removal and capture of hydrocarbons from stormwater runoff. Gross pollutants and sediment are also captured by the smart sponge filters. This product has been a huge success over the past few years with over 13,000 installations in over 100 cities in the US already as well as installations in France, Switzerland, Italy, England, Canada, Russia and China.

| TARGET POLLUTANTS |
 The Smart Sponge’s unique molecular structure is based on innovative polymer technologies that are chemically selective to hydrocarbons. Smart Sponge® fully encapsulates recovered oil, resulting in a substantially more effective response that prevents absorbed oil from leaching. It is also capable of removing low levels of oil from water, thereby successfully removing sheen.
Once oil is absorbed, the Smart Sponge® transforms the pollutants into a stable solid for easy recycling, providing a closed-loop solution to water pollution. Smart Sponge® technology provides cost-effective BMPs with low installation and maintenance labour costs. In comparison to other products, the Smart Sponge® technology also allows for less expensive and less problematic handling and disposal of the waste product, since its technology transforms liquid oil and other pollutants into a stable solid. The Smart Sponge® has been designed not to deteriorate in water, allowing for a longer product life, and it remains buoyant in calm or agitated water, permitting it to remain in place until fully saturated and resulting in no wasted product

| INSTALLATION |
 The Smart Sponge® can be installed in a variety shapes and sizes depending on the application. The Ultra-Urban® filter is the most common form of the Smart Sponge® and can easily, and cost effectively, be installed into new or existing catchpits for the removal of pollutants at source.
Vault systems are also available for "end of line" solutions where higher flow rates require treatment and the Smart Sponge® can also be incorporated into existing oil water treatment devices to improve their performance and reduce the ongoing maintenance costs.

| PERFORMANCE |
| Field and laboratory tests have confirmed the capability of the Smart Sponge® to absorb, depending on the type of oil contaminant, up to three times its own weight and remove up to 95% of the hydrocarbons present in Stormwater runoff, typically in the range of 5 to 30 mg/litre (ppm). The captured oil is permanently bound within the Smart Sponge®, eliminating leaching and allowing for easy disposal of the filtration media. |
